TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, usability and feature set

You’ll be able to do more than just order sushi with Rosetta Stone Japanese. This program is one of the best ways to learn Japanese, whether you want to be fluent enough to travel to Japan or just expand your knowledge of other languages.

It's considered a daunting task to speak Japanese because it is so different than English, but this software manages to simplify the task enough that anyone can do it, helping it to earn the TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award. This program makes it easy and intuitive, using image-word association techniques instead of lists of vocabulary and grammar rules to memorize.

Even though this system has made it so simple, it still manages to cover all the fundamentals. You will absorb vocabulary and grammar as you listen to native speakers and respond using a speech recognition system. This makes it easier to practice what you're learning and get immediate feedback about your comprehension and accent.

While it is more expensive than many language programs, Rosetta Stone Japanese is one of the best investments to make. Since it includes all the features you'll need, it’s easy to see why the program is one of the top-ranked on our site. The only aspect which kept it from the number one spot was the fact that this software only includes lesson one, for the price the other software offers for lessons 1, 2 and 3. There is software available which includes all three lessons, but it is also double the price.

This Japanese learning software has an excellent progress-tracking feature. It compiles records of your performance into one screen that easily lets you see where you have been and how well you have done. This helps you identify where you need the most practice. Rosetta Stone also gives you full control of which lessons you do and in what order you do them, which is nice since you will know exactly where you need the most work.

The package comes with a headset and microphone so you can speak into the program and improve your pronunciation and word retention. There is also an audio companion which will enable you to download a set of CD’s on your MP3 player and take your lessons with you wherever you go.

It is very important for language software to be user-friendly because, let's face it, it's hard enough to learn another language as it is. This is where they soar above the competition. This program is so simple that you probably won’t need to watch the tutorial to understand how the interface works. Each exercise has a simple set of options, and you can easily return to the main menu at any point.

The program's curriculum for learning Japanese only uses a few tools for teaching. It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as other language programs, but rather focuses on making the few tools it does have to be more efficient and effective. With this software you will learn things such as how to read and write Japanese, how to speak without a script, how to build your vocabulary by going over language basics and how to better understand the language in all its various aspects. You will be taught using a variety of common topics including family relations, introductions, calendar terms and more.

The program primarily uses images and sound clips of native speakers to help you associate words with images and ideas, just like the way you learned English. Then they incorporate word recognition activities and speech recognition to practice new words and concepts. The system works very well without the program ever needing to translate something or give explicit grammar lessons.

This is the only area where Rosetta Stone is lacking. They don't include much in the way of glossaries or grammar texts. Arguably, their teaching system makes them obsolete, but some people still like the reassurance of a dictionary. On the other hand, there are easy ways to display and learn the three alphabets of the Japanese language, hiragana, katakana and kanji. These features help you learn and practice them so you can read as well as speak Japanese, which is a large bonus not offered by all programs.
